A Night with Janis Joplin opens October 10.
Lyceum Theatre, 149 W. 45th St
If the thought of the hard-rocking, harder-living singer coming to the Great White Way
makes you a bit leery, don't fear: A Night with Janis Joplin is not a typical Broadway
musical. Directed and conceived by Randy Johnson with input from Joplin's brother and
sister, the show is more of a concert-which is where Joplin was at her best, whether at
Woodstock or in a hazy blues club. There are bits of story woven in from her early years
in Port Arthur, Texas, as well as the period from 1967 to 1970 when her star burned the
brightest. Looking eerily similar to Joplin, newcomer Mary Bridget Davies has the
daunting task of embodying the rock star on stage. But ably supported by a band and
three backup singers, Davies pulls it off, and her raw voice does justice to Joplin's hits,
like "Piece of My Heart, " "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Ball and Chain."
